PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Lead the delivery of quality undergraduate and postgraduate dental programs and ensure the continued accreditation of the programs offered by the Discipline.
2. In collaboration with the Dean of the College of Medicine and Dentistry, develop and maintain the strategic functions of the Discipline in the context of the University, Divisional and College strategic plans.
   
3. Establish and maintain suitable discipline organisational structures and quality assurance processes, particularly in relation to teaching, clinical supervision and research.
   
4. Manage the resources of the Discipline of Dentistry in the context of the College and Academy budgets.
   
5. Manage student academic and professional misconduct and other student matters as determined by the Dean in accordance with relevant policies and in conjunction with the Associate Dean Students.
6. In conjunction with the College Dean and Associate Deans of Research and Research Education develop and support the research profile of the discipline and engage with business and industry organisations to develop research opportunities relevant to the Discipline.
7. Actively contribute to Divisional and College senior management functions and initiatives and collaborate with other colleges and disciplines to support the development of divisional and University initiatives.
8. Ensure a quality supportive clinical learning environment for dentistry students and staff, and a safe and supportive experience for clients of clinics, in conjunction with the clinic providers.
9. Develop and maintain effective links with professional organisations, hospital and health services, government departments and authorities and promote activities of the discipline to the external community.
10. Support the University's commitment to the principles of reconciliation, which exemplify respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and the valuing of justice and equity for all Australians.
11. Demonstrate a commitment to the University values.

GENERIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

There are generic responsibilities that apply to all James Cook University staff.

1. The Head of Dentistry is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies and decisions of the University Council, understand and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, the policies and decisions of the University Council and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.
2. The Head of Dentistry is required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University WHS policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations. Contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance.
   
3. The Head of Dentistry is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the well-being of the University which involve public writing or speaking in accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

1. The Head of Dentistry must maintain full registration with the Dental Board of Australia as a dental practitioner.
2. The Head of Dentistry must provide three (3) clinical teaching sessions per week into the JCU Dental clinic.
3. It is a requirement of this position to travel throughout Queensland and nationally or internationally as required which may include overnight stays and after hours work.
4. It is a requirement of this position to hold a current 'C' class Queensland driver's licence. 

1. Higher qualifications in Dentistry and extensive clinical experience in dental practice.
2. Experience in the leadership of tertiary education for dental practitioners with demonstrated experience in coordinating and teaching undergraduate and/or postgraduate programs in dentistry.
3. Demonstrated leadership, organisational and business management skills, including effective management of staff.
4. A substantial research record, success in attracting external grants and experience in liaising and collaborating with external agencies to develop cooperative research initiatives.
5. Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to establish effective relationships and to represent and promote dentistry at a university and wider community level, including industry, government and professional bodies.
   

DESIRABLE CRITERIA

1. Established relationships with organisations and leaders relevant to the teaching of dentistry professional courses in Australia.
2. Knowledge of the Australian Health system and experience in the provision of dental services in rural and remote communities.

To be appointable at Academy Level E, the following criteria will also apply:

1. Past or current national standing within academic dentistry education or dentistry specialist training in Australia; and/or
2. A leading authority with a record of outstanding academic leadership and achievement relating to dentistry or dentistry education.
