Thank you for your interest in the position of Dean and Head of Medicine. This role presents a unique opportunity to contribute to the leadership, vision, management and performance of the College of Medicine and Dentistry, as we develop innovative ways of expanding the portfolio, attracting new students, developing and sustaining a research culture and expanding partnerships across the discipline and wider health sector.

Academy
The Academy delivers the education and research programs of the University through the Colleges, including enabling, pathways and short courses through to undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and research programs. The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academy works in close collaboration with the Vice-Chancellor to deliver on JCU’s objectives and strategic intent.

College of Medicine and Dentistry
The College of Medicine and Dentistry aims to promote health and strengthen healthcare for the communities of northern Australia and beyond, through socially accountable health professional education, discoveries, partnerships, advocacy, and leadership. It delivers unique education and training to produce health professionals who aspire to make a difference in rural and regional Australia.
The College promotes, fosters, supports, and administers quality teaching and research in medicine, dentistry and pharmacy, with a focus on the needs of rural, remote, and underserved communities, tropical medicine and the health of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders.
The Federal Government's Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training (RHMT) program supports the College to increase student training in rural and remote areas, both through clinical schools and placement opportunities. Under the RHMT program, the College also administers the Regional Training Hubs initiative in partnership with regional hospital and health service providers and GP clinics, to support and grow a specialist medical workforce for regional Queensland.

The Dean and Head of Medicine leads the Medicine Academic Group within the College of Medicine and Dentistry. The Head provides academic leadership and management of the College’s learning and teaching, research, research education and engagement activities in Medicine and is the academic leader for the Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program.
Reporting to the Dean of the College, the Head of Medicine contributes to the leadership, vision, management, and performance of the College and the University more broadly. The Dean and Head is a key point of external engagement with the medical profession, the Australian Medical Council (AMC), the healthcare industry, and the network of medical schools across Australia and New Zealand.
The Dean and Head of Medicine is a leader and collaborator who drives the alignment of teaching, research and service to the priority needs of the communities that JCU serves, promoting multi-disciplinary approaches and working with and within local communities. The Head represents the interests of Medicine at the College, Division and University level.








Key accountabilities
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Lead the Medicine Academic Group in learning, teaching, assessment, research and engagement activities.
- Manage the planning, implementation, review and continuous development of the Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program to assure graduate outcomes, maintain AMC accreditation and achieve College aims.
- As Course Coordinator for the MBBS and in conjunction with the Head of Foundation Studies and the Head of Clinical Studies, work with discipline experts, year and module co-ordinators and course committees to manage integrated MBBS teaching and assessment across disciplines and in collaboration with other Academic Groups that contribute to the program.
- Make a personal contribution to the teaching and assessment of students in the MBBS program.
- Manage student academic and professional misconduct and other student matters as determined by the Dean in accordance with relevant policies and in conjunction with the Associate Dean Students.
- In conjunction with the College Dean and Associate Deans of Research and Research Education provide intellectual leadership through the promotion and support of research and ensure robust research outcomes and high-quality research education for the academic group.
- Oversee and manage ongoing professional development, leave and workload allocation for academic staff within the Medicine Academic Group.
- Ensuring the College finances are managed responsibly and strategically within a budget allocation in conjunction with the Dean and College Manager.
- Contribute to strategic planning and the achievement of priorities established in consultation with the College Dean.
- Support the University's commitment to the principles of reconciliation, which exemplify respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and the valuing of justice and equity for all Australians.
- Demonstrate a commitment to the University values.
- Support the principles of the TropEco program and engage in commitment to JCU sustainability goals and objectives.
GENERIC ACCOUNTABILITIES
There are generic responsibilities that apply to all James Cook University staff.
- The Dean and Head of Medicine is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies and decisions of the University Council, understand and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, the policies and decisions of the University Council and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.
- The Dean and Head of Medicine is required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University WHS policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations. Contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance.
- The Dean and Head of Medicine is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the well-being of the University which involve public writing or speaking in accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- It is a requirement of this position to hold registration as a medical practitioner in Australia and Fellowship of a relevant Australian specialist College.
- It is a requirement of this position to hold a Queensland driver's license.
- It is a requirement of this position to be able to travel throughout Queensland and nationally or internationally as required. This may include overnight stays and after hours work.
Key selection criteria
- A postgraduate qualification and significant experience in the delivery of clinical education and training in the Australian health system or similar.
- A record of professional impact in one or more priority themes for medicine at JCU: rural health; tropical health; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health; global health; and the health of underserved populations.
- A strong record of teaching and assessment in undergraduate and/or postgraduate medical education.
- Demonstrated ability to shape strategic thinking, communicate with influence, negotiate persuasively and build alliances.
- A record of scholarship, research, intellectual leadership, publication and conference presentations in health and/or health professional education.
- A demonstrated record of involvement with performance management and professional development and the ability to lead academic staff at discipline and College level.
- A commitment to inter-professional learning.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA
- Substantial experience in health professional curriculum design, course delivery and evaluation.
- A PhD in health, science or education field.
- A well-developed understanding of the Australian health system and the role of medical education and training in contributing to the health workforce.
To be appointable at Academy Level E, the following criteria will also apply:
- Past or current national standing within academic medical education or medical specialist training in Australia; and/or
- A leading authority with a record of outstanding academic leadership and achievement relating to medicine or medical education.

- With seven direct reports, this position is responsible to the Dean, College of Medicine and Dentistry.
- This opportunity is offered on a full-time, fixed term basis at Academic level E or D.
- The role will be primarily based at the Bebegu Yumba Townsville campus, however travel between campuses and JCU remote sites shall be required from time to time.

JCU campuses
Over 13,000 students study at the Bebegu Yumba campus, Townsville, including over 1,500 international students. The JCU Townsville, Douglas campus has been named Bebegu Yumba, which means ‘Place of Learning’ in the Birri-Gubba language.
JCU Townsville, Bebegu Yumba campus is located in the Townsville Tropical Intelligence and Health Precinct (TropiQ) in the suburb of Douglas. Set in a 386-hectare natural bush and parkland setting, 13 kilometres from the Townsville CBD, the campus houses teaching and research facilities, the main JCU library, cafes, bard, fitness and sporting facilities and a wealth of student clubs and societies. Around 1,400 students live on campus in colleges and halls of residence, giving the campus a true community atmosphere.


Around 3,000 students study at JCU Cairns, including around 355 international students. They are immersed in a dynamic learning environment with a world of experiences available for study, work, and play.
JCU Cairns, Smithfield campus has been named Nguma-bada (pronounced nom-ah-bud-ah), which means belonging to tomorrow: ‘Place for tomorrow's learning, knowledge and wisdom’ from the Yirrgay (Yirrganydji) coastal dialect of Djabugay.
Located in the heart of city, JCU Cairns, CBD campus has been named Bada-jali (pronounced bud-ah-jal-lee) and means flowering of the Cocky Apple tree: ‘Place and time for new beginnings and growth’, also from the Yirrgay (Yirrganydji) coastal dialect of Djabugay. The campus offers a range of flexible study, teaching, and meeting areas.
James Cook University, Singapore Campus (JCU Singapore) was established in 2003 as JCU's first international campus, bringing programs direct from Australia and resident senior academic staff from JCU to ensure academic quality.
