Position overview
The Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) delivers visionary leadership and management of operational performance of the Marketing, Future Students and Admissions Directorate, ensuring objectives and activities align with the strategic priorities of the Division and whole of University. The CMO is to ensure measurable outcomes are achieved to ensure ongoing sustainability and growth.
CMO reports to Deputy of Vice-Chancellor, Services and Resources.
The Chief Marketing Officer is accountable for:
- Leading and actively contributing to strategic and operational planning for the Directorate, ensuring financial sustainability, risk mitigation, compliance and innovative outcomes are achieved.
- Delivering whole-of-institution and sector leading, best practice, marketing and student recruitment, services, resources, activities, policies and strategies which directly impact student sales, JCU brand awareness and agreed success outcomes.
- Ensuring the ongoing viability and return on investment of all student recruitment and marketing activities (domestic and international) across all of JCU’s campuses, including Australia and Singapore, through the strategic analysis of data and evidence, implementing risk mitigation or corrective actions and strategies to ensure successful marketing and student recruitment outcomes are realised.
- Ensuring senior leaders and stakeholders are well-informed through the provision of high quality, strategic, policy and operational advice, so as to mitigate risk, drive innovation, achieve enrolment targets and inform decision making.
- Performing as a leader by fostering an environment of productive interaction, coordination and cooperation between the team, the Directorate and broader University staff, including leading and representing the work unit in relevant University committees.



Key requirements for success:
- Post graduate qualifications and experience commensurate with a senior leadership position within a large, complex organisation.
- Extensive leadership and management skills with demonstrated ability to develop objectives, whole of unit operating plans and provide guidance to motivate and develop high performing teams with evidence of positive outcomes for diverse clients.
- Extensive knowledge of current policy imperatives in higher education and their relevance to the implementation of University-wide student support initiatives.
- High level communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills with proven ability to collaborate with a range of stakeholders and capacity to lead cross University committees.
- Demonstrated experience in implementing innovative and creative solutions to deliver efficiencies through improved processes, systems and ways of working.
- Advanced problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to use discretion and make decisions on a broad range of complex and sensitive issues to achieve program outcomes.
Position Dimensions
- This position will be responsible for the management and leadership of staff.
- Budget accountability: $TBC
- This position may be required to travel within the region and overseas including overnight stays and perform after-hours work on occasion.
- It is a requirement of this position to hold a current Working with Children Suitability Card (Blue Card).
- It is a requirement of this position to hold a current ‘C’ class Queensland Drivers Licence.
- Participation in competency and compliance training, as well as adherence to the Enterprise Agreement and Code of Conduct is required.

JCU campuses
Over 13,000 students study at the Bebegu Yumba campus, Townsville, including over 1,500 international students. The JCU Townsville, Douglas campus has been named Bebegu Yumba, which means ‘Place of Learning’ in the Birri-Gubba language.
JCU Townsville, Bebegu Yumba campus is located in the Townsville Tropical Intelligence and Health Precinct (TropiQ) in the suburb of Douglas. Set in a 386-hectare natural bush and parkland setting, 13 kilometres from the Townsville CBD, the campus houses teaching and research facilities, the main JCU library, cafes, bard, fitness and sporting facilities and a wealth of student clubs and societies. Around 1,400 students live on campus in colleges and halls of residence, giving the campus a true community atmosphere.


Around 3,000 students study at JCU Cairns, including around 355 international students. They are immersed in a dynamic learning environment with a world of experiences available for study, work, and play.
JCU Cairns, Smithfield campus has been named Nguma-bada (pronounced nom-ah-bud-ah), which means belonging to tomorrow: ‘Place for tomorrow's learning, knowledge and wisdom’ from the Yirrgay (Yirrganydji) coastal dialect of Djabugay.
Located in the heart of city, JCU Cairns, CBD campus has been named Bada-jali (pronounced bud-ah-jal-lee) and means flowering of the Cocky Apple tree: ‘Place and time for new beginnings and growth’, also from the Yirrgay (Yirrganydji) coastal dialect of Djabugay. The campus offers a range of flexible study, teaching, and meeting areas.
James Cook University, Singapore Campus (JCU Singapore) was established in 2003 as JCU's first international campus, bringing programs direct from Australia and resident senior academic staff from JCU to ensure academic quality.
Students studying at JCU Singapore are assured of the same enriching university education as our students in Queensland Australia. It has achieved the highest level of accreditation from the Singapore Government, the EduTrust Star.


With a modern campus in the heart of Brisbane’s CBD, JCU Brisbane offers courses in accounting, business, education, hospitality and tourism, social work, and information technology.
